Have you ever spent too much time peeling garlic, only to end up with sticky fingers and half-mashed cloves? I certainly have. So when I read a tip in Cook’s Illustrated about using a silicone garlic peeler to prep herbs like thyme and lavender, I figured it was time to test it out.

Warning: This is my first ever demonstration video…please be kind. No editing since I don’t have the skills. #goals

🧪 The Test

This unassuming little gadget is just a flexible silicone tube. You insert your garlic cloves, press gently with your palm, and roll it back and forth on the counter. That’s it. In seconds, the papery skins come off, and the garlic pops out clean. It’s oddly satisfying.

Curious about the herb tip, I also tried rolling sprigs of thyme through the tube to strip the leaves. It worked surprisingly well for small bundles—much neater than manually pulling the leaves off the stems. It’s a win.

✅ Pros:

  • Fast and fuss-free garlic peeling

  • No garlic odor on your fingers

  • Easy to rinse and clean

  • Doubles as an herb prep tool for woody sprigs

❌ Cons:

  • Doesn’t work well with small or very dry cloves - be sure to use the same size cloves

  • Can get lost in your gadget drawer if you’re not careful - pick a bright color that you can easily locate

👩‍🍳 Final Verdict:

This tool won’t change your life—but it might make peeling garlic a little more pleasant. It’s inexpensive, effective, and easy to clean. And if you’re like me and love discovering clever kitchen tricks, you’ll find yourself reaching for it more often than you’d expect.

Bonus Use: Try it on thyme or lavender as a gentle herb stripper!
